promises. still alive.

“things won’t change?”

he reminds her of those once spoken words

of answers effortlessly given

too innocent, too much left unsaid

the pain of a broken promise

the shattering of something once beautiful, pure

and as she embraces him

moving her gaze to meet his

he detects a hint in her eyes

of longing

for what could have been

turning away from the singular place

that felt like

safety

trust

hope

but with conviction

that not everything in life is meant to be something

beautiful and long lasting

running, now

each step another string inside breaking

of what she constructed in her mind

to be the source of light and joy

when all along

everything she thought she needed

could be found within herself

glass shards in her hand

catching a glimpse

in the twinkling of the night

of a reflection unknown for too long

hearing the distant slam of a door

knowing that the world now stands between them

knowing that the only thing permanent

is change itself
